Academic Support

St. Andrew's-Sewanee School believes in the value of diversity in an academic setting. We strive to have a student population that is racially, religiously, economically and academically heterogeneous. We are careful to admit students who can handle the rigors of our college preparatory program, but we recognize that students may come to us with insufficient preparation or learning differences that may require some extra effort on the part of both the student and the faculty members.

Teachers are eager to provide additional instruction to help students who are struggling with their current assignments. St. Andrew's-Sewanee also employs several experienced tutors who can be engaged (for an additional fee) to provide one-on-one assistance to students who require it. Teachers, students, or parents may initiate the request for tutoring. Time is built into the academic schedule for tutoring and for study halls.

SAS faculty members are also highly attuned to the many different ways that students learn. Over the course of each class period, teachers will attempt to cover the material using several different learning styles.

Students who want to learn are generally able to succeed at St. Andrew's-Sewanee. Our teachers enjoy the challenge of helping a motivated but struggling student navigate the sometimes choppy waters of high school studies.

One-on-One Attention

Assistance for the Student Who Needs More

For the student who needs more intense one-on-one assistance, SAS employees four professional tutors, including one learning differences specialist. Students may request or be referred to tutoring for subject specific assistance or for general help in organizing their study time. Because our tutors work specifically with St. Andrew's-Sewanee, they have a thorough understanding of our mission, philosophy, and curriculum.

Time is built into the school day for tutoring and our tutors are also available after school and at night. The tutoring offices are located in our main academic building, making the sessions very convenient and increasing the opportunities for communication between tutors and classroom teachers. On-site tutoring also means that needing additional academic support doesn't preclude a student from being involved in athletics or other after school activities.
