Clay

Working with clay is one of the hallmarks of the SAS experience. The school has two professional potters on the faculty and a well-equipped clay studio that includes many potting wheels and several kilns. Students and teachers enjoy the creative and contemplative opportunities this medium provides. Clay courses focus on form, design and purpose with an emphasis on gaining technical skills and knowledge.

Over the years, SAS students have won numerous awards for their work. In 2005, three students had works accepted for exhibition in the National Council for Education on Ceramic Arts' Eighth Annual K-12 Ceramic Exhibit in Baltimore, Maryland. Each year, several works by several students are chosen for the Hunter Museum's Juried ArtScene exhibit.

The SAS Art Gallery brings accomplished potters and sculptors to the campus throughout the year for lectures and demonstrations. Recent guest artists have included Pete Pinnell, associate professor of art at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln; artists from the Arrowmont School for Arts and Crafts; and American Craft Council Fellow and alumna Cynthia Bringle.
