A Sampling of Arts Courses

Studio Art provides a foundation in two-dimensional art and design. Studio practice is supplemented with readings, discussions and visits with artists and to galleries or museums. Basic understanding of the elements of design and the principles of organization are emphasized through assignments focusing on drawing, composition, and color. This course is offered both semesters and can be repeated for more in depth exploration with a different instructor.

Advanced Drawing is a life drawing course designed for those who wish to further hone drafting skills and eye-to-hand coordination. Students will spend one term focusing on figure drawing from a model, one term working from still life and nature, and a final term on imaginary subjects drawn from life. Drawing scale will range from oversized to miniatures.

Painting and Mixed Media allows students to experiment with color using various art mediums to create paintings on paper and canvas. Through the use of oil pastels, chalk pastels and watercolor students will create landscapes and still life paintings from direct observation. Students will also use acrylics to explore the possibilities of color harmony and other color theory principles. As different techniques and materials are introduced appropriate artists and movements in art history will be examined. The term will end with a final critique and presentation of a finished painting on canvas.

Printmaking and Book Arts introduces students to diverse printmaking techniques. Opportunities to experiment with block-printing, intaglio, silkscreen, mono-printing, digital printing, and solar printing will be coupled with exploration into content and context of the contemporary printmaker. Historical and contemporary prints will be examined through research and visits to public and private collections. The artist book will be explored both as a publishing and exhibition format. Students will create a collaborative edition and an individual edition or a series for final written and oral presentation.

Introduction to Hand Papermaking examines the history and technique of handmade paper through demonstrations, lectures and studio work sessions. Students will have opportunity to examine handmade papers from around the world created using a variety of fibers and formation techniques, and learn about the different ways these papers are used. A field trip will include a visit to The American Museum of Paper in Atlanta, with a stop stop at Ichiyo Japanese Paper.
