Road Trip: Cowan

Cowan, Tennessee, is a small town about a 15-minute drive down the Mountain from the SAS campus. Once the stepping off point for train service between Nashville and Chattanooga and the jumping on point for the Mountain Goat railroad service to Sewanee, older SAS alumni have fond memories of nights and weekends spent in Cowan.

When passenger rail service fell out of favor, Cowan fell on hard times. But now, thanks in large part to the efforts of the Pearsons, a family of SAS alumni, Cowan is experiencing a rebirth.

In addition to an elegant bed-and-breakfast inn, Cowan offers Italian, Fusion, Mexican and Cajun dining. A quaint railroad museum tells the story of the little town that could.
