Father Thomas Assumes the Helm
The Rev. John Taliaferro Thomas assumed the role of Head of School on July 1. Fr. Thomas comes to SAS from St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Potomac, Md. where he served as Chaplain and a senior administrator, taught in the Religion Department, coordinated the school's service learning and summer outreach programs and coached varsity golf. Fr. Thomas is a graduate of the University of the South and Virginia Theological Seminary. The Thomas Family, Fr. Thomas, wife Janice, daughter Emily and son Sam, will reside in Ayres House on the SAS campus. Fr. Thomas succeeds the Rev. William S. Wade who recently retired after having served as Head of School for 27 years.

SAS Faculty Family Involved in Sichuan Quake Relief
Last year SAS Chinese instructor Bob Edwards took a group of SAS students on a tour of China, including a lengthy stay in the his wife's hometown of Chengdu, an area greatly affected by the 7.9 earthquake which struck Sichuan Province on May 12. Two of the highlights of that leg of their journey was visiting the Great Panda Research Center and the opportunity to meet students at Yang Yangchu Engineering School in Dujiangyan. Although Yang Yangchu escaped the fatalities that many school's in the region suffered during the devestating quake, most of their campus was destroyed. Now Mr. Edwards, his wife Jan Zhan-Edwards, and the U.S. China People's Friendship Association of Chattanooga are working to help rebuild the school.

Welcoming New Faculty for 2008-09
St. Andrew's-Sewanee will welcome three new faculty members this fall. Violet Reid, Katherine Anderson, and Grover Levy each bring more than a decade of experience in their discipline. They will all live on campus and provide residential support in addition to their teaching and coaching duties.

Jin Choi's Art Chosen for Frist Exhibition
Junior Jin Choi's art work will appear at Nashville's Frist Center for the Visual Art's second biannual Statewide AP Exhibit. The 36 pieces represented were chosen from 750 submissions by Tennessee high school students who participated in the Advanced Placement Studio Art program.

Teasley Named "Teacher of the Future"
SAS art teacher Christi Teasley was recently named a National Association of Independent School's Teacher of the Future. Teasley, who was chosen for her demonstrated classroom innovation and leadership, will be one of 25 moderators for a new online teachers's discussion forum.

Three Students Recognized in National Merit Competition
Three SAS juniors, Zach Huffman, Daniel Shaver and Carly Westling, recently qualified for National Merit recognition. In the SAS tradition of well-roundedness, these students share among them the accolades of state-qualifying swimmer, Boy Scout, varsity soccer player, thespian, record-holding long distance runner, and musician.

Making History: #1 in the State
The SAS girls' tennis team made state and school history when they clinched the Division II Class A state tennis title. Eighth grader Sadie Shackelford is the first eighth grader in Tennessee history to win a state tennis title. Sister Avery also finished in the top ten.

Father Wade's "No Strings Attached" Now Available
In honor of the retirement of the Rev. William S. Wade, the school has published a No Strings Attached, a collection of thirty-one sermons that span Fr. Wade's twenty-seven years as Head of School. All proceeds from the sale of the books will go to the William S. Wade Fund for Financial Aid.
