The Votes Are In!
The votes are in and Barack Obama is the big winner of the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School 2008 Mock Presidential Election. Obama secured 61% of the SAS vote. The mock election was the idea of senior Conley Averett. “I think this is a very important election, not only to the very diverse SAS community, but also to Sewanee, and to the entire country,” said Conley. This election is particularly special for Conley who turns 18 and earns the right to vote just two days before the polls open. “I was so inspired at the thought of voting in my first presidential election, a very historical and groundbreaking one." Quid Cogitas?
A recent New York Times column by Maureen Dowd has sparked discussions and creativity in Bill Seavey's Latin classes and on the school's intranet board, SASSAFRAS. "I've been able to put our Catullus and Horace readings on hold for a week or two in order to allow the more advanced students to study this timely article and to understand just how valuable and relevant their Latin and classical education is," said Seavey. "I was amused by the facility our students displayed in making up clever phrases in Latin, such as Obamanatio or Biden tempus meum."

Allison Underground Premieres October 17-19
The SAS Players will present “Allison Underground” in the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School Theater, October 17-19. The original comedy follows the adventures of a group of American teens who get lost in an underground shopping mall. Performances are October 17 at 8 p.m., October 18 at 7 p.m. and October 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children (under 10). SAS Students are admitted free. For reservations, call the SAS box office at (931) 968-0202.

Parents' Weekend October 17-19
SAS welcomes Upper School hosts Fall Parents’ Weekend October 17-19. The weekend includes a class walk-through, opportunities for individual meetings with teachers, a college counseling workshop and various social events including the premiere of the student production “Allison Underground.”

Wild West Auction November 8
On Saturday, November 8, St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School will go “Wild, Wild West” for their annual auction. Beginning with silent auction items at 6:30 p.m., bidders will have the chance to vie for hundreds of items. Fabulous trips include a week in Paris; a Telluride, Colo. ski lodge; a fly fishing trip in Montana, beach homes, North Carolina cabins, and many more. Auction items such as tickets to sports and cultural events, artwork, unique services, jewelry, and sports equipment all make great Christmas gifts. Works of Fiber Artist Coral Turner '92 in Gallery
The works of fiber artist Coral Turner '92 are on in the SAS Gallery, October 2-31. There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, October 30, 5-7 p.m. and a one-day workshop for community members on November 1, 9-4.
