INFORMATION FOR COMPLETING COLLEGE AND FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION FORMS

Spring of Junior Year

  • College Planning Day
  • Cost-to-Coast College Fair
  • Résumé and Interview Skills Workshop

Summer before Senior Year

  • Visit colleges.
  • Complete Senior Survey on Naviance.
  • Work on résumé.
  • Write a draft essay using Common Application topics.
  • Identify schools requiring interviews and/or offering alumni interviews.
  • Check admissions webpages for required math and lab science classes.
  • Practice the SAT and ACT.
  • Register for the October SAT and October ACT.
  • Consider attending a Colleges That Change Lives College Fairs.
  • Complete Parent Questionnaire (Naviance or hard copy)

August-September of Senior Year

  • Attend Opening Day meeting senior parents.
  • Reduce college list to ten schools or fewer.
  • Finish the Common Application.
  • Meet with Mrs. Asmussen to finalize your list.
  • Meet with visiting college reps.
  • Attend Family Weekend FAFSA program.

October-November of Senior Year

  • File state school applications.
  • Initiate paperwork for Tuition Exchange schools (Univ. of the South employees)
  • Begin completing FAFSA.
  • Take SAT and SAT Subject Tests.
  • Use Fall Long Weekend for college visits.
  • Take ACT.
  • File Early Decision/Early Acceptance applications.
  • Complete and file CSS Profile registration, if required.
  • Finish up campus visits and interviews.
  • Register for Tennessee PROMISE, if applicable.
  • Request transcripts and recommendation for January 1 deadines.

December of Senior Year

  • Take SAT and SAT Subject Tests.
  • Take ACT

January of Senior Year

  • All applications should be submitted.
  • Verify that all required financial aid applications and materials are submitted.
  • Check with colleges to verify that all applications are complete.

Spring of Senior Year

  • Receive decisions
  • Schedule return visits.
  • Participate in Admitted Student programs.
  • Follow up on any Wait List situations.
  • Commit to one school.
  • Notify other schools that you are enrolling elsewhere.

College Counseling Calendar

Director of College Counseling Christine Asmussen

Christine Asmussen has been helping SAS students get into the right college for more than 25 years. Before coming to SAS, she held teaching and administrative positions at schools and colleges in New York and Ohio. As college counselor, she travels the nation visiting colleges and universities. Mrs. Asmussen is a member of the National Association of College Admissions Counselors (NACAC) and the Southern Association of College Admissions Counselors (SACAC). She has also assisted stduents in China through Dipont Education in Shanghai.

Mrs. Asmussen holds a B.A. from Mount Saint Mary's College and an M.A. from Columbia University. Her college counseling experience goes beyond the professional, she is the mother of four SAS graduates who attended Dickinson College, Sewanee, Skidmore and Agnes Scott.
