Burns is High Jump State Champ!

Ten St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School athletes qualified for the TSSAA Division II A Championships held May 26, 2021. The girls’ team finished in 11th place out of 26 teams competing at the event.

SAS senior Sarah Grace Burns won the Girls’ High Jump with a mark of 5’2”, one inch shy of the school record she had set earlier in the year. Junior Riley Burnette placed 8th in the Triple Jump. Sophomore Verena Pate finished 6th in the 100m Hurdles with a PR of 18:51. “This was only the third time Verena had run hurdles in a meet,” noted Head Coach Margot Burns. “Her hard work in a short period of time really paid off!”

The SAS girls’ and boys’ 4x800 Relay teams (Girls - Charlie Barron, Maya Mauzy, Melanie Val, and Chloe Middlebrooks; Boys - (Elijah Seavey, Alex Brewster, Zolon Knoll, and Kyler Cantrell) both placed 7th at the meet with the boys setting a PR for the season with a run of 9:29.48.

“This is the most athletes we have taken to the state meet in recent memory,” said Coach Burns. “The support that they provided for each other throughout the season to get to this point was inspirational. It was an absolute thrill to see the kids complete in front of such a large and enthusiastic crowd. What a joy to end a difficult school year on such a high note and with a state champion in the house!”
