Varsity Girls' Wrestling Team 2020

SAS wrestlers Verena Pate and Iliana Pate qualified for the TSSAA State Wrestling Tournament and came away with 2nd and 4th places in their respective weight classes.

Freshman Verena Pate entered the tournament as the top seed in the state. She easily moved through the quarterfinals. After a tough win in the semifinals, Verena advanced to the championship match.  In the championship, Verena faced a two-time state champion. Not one to be intimidated, Verena came out and wrestled hard but, the other wrestler prevailed. Verena had an unforgettable freshman year, finished the year 28-4 and as the state runner-up.

Coming into the tournament as the 3rd seed, sophomore Iliana Pate wrestled some of her best matches this season. She came away with two big pins. Her first win was in the quarterfinals with a pin early in the second period. After a battle in the semifinals, she entered the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Iliana wasted no time and pinned her opponent in :54. Entering the 3rd place match, Iliana faced the East Regional Champion. The match went back and forth, and Iliana truly wrestled her heart out. She fought hard and lost a heartbreaker 7-4, finishing the tournament in 4th place. Her season record stands at 24-12. 

The SAS Girls' Wrestling Team finished 11th in the state.
