2019 Fall MVPs

St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School celebrated the fall varsity athletic season in an all-school assembly on Wednesday, November 6.

Varsity Cross Country
The school’s cross country team was coached by David Prehn with the assistance of Jen Bachman. The team voted sophomores Charlie Strippel (Hilden, Germany) and Alex Brewster (Sewanee, Tenn.) as the Most Valuable Runners and junior Hannah Warmbrod (Belvidere, Tenn.) as Most Improved Runner. Prehn and Bachman bestowed the Coaches’ Award on senior Noah Henley (Cowan, Tenn.) and sophomore Charlie Barron (Chattanooga, Tenn.). Strippel finished 4th in the region and 27th in the state. All of the runners set new personal records this season, and each runner placed in the top 10 at least once during the season.

Varsity Football
Football Head Coach John Hargis and assistant coaches Neal Johnson and John Wheeler chose sophomore Cameron Robinson (Winchester, Tenn.) for the Coaches’ Award. The team voted senior Cailan McLean (Sewanee, Tenn.) as Most Valuable Player and freshman Kyler Cantrell (Sewanee, Tenn.) as Most Improved Player. McLean and Robinson were named to the 2019 Chick-Fil-A Extreme All-Star Team. 

Golf
Head Golf Coach Stephen Thomas named freshman Luca Malde (Sewanee, Tenn.) for the Coaches’ Award. The team voted sophomore Tyler Rodgers (Sewanee, Tenn.) as MVP. The full team of Malde, Rodgers, Nathan King (Sewanee, Tenn.), and Robert Graham (Tullahoma, Tenn.) qualified for the regional tournament.

Varsity Mountain Biking
Head Mountain Biking Coach Speed Baranco was assisted by coaches Beth Pride Ford and Michael Short as well as numerous community volunteers, including Jill and Pete Mollica, Barbara and John Fox, Alex Durant, Karen Singer, Steve Holt, Matt Schrader, and Sian Baranco. The Most Improved Rider Award went to junior Ivan Stoyanchev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria). Senior Evan Fox (Sewanee, Tenn.) was named Most Valuable Rider. The Coaches’ Award went to sophomore Eli Thompson (Belvidere, Tenn.). The team finished their season on Sunday, November 3 with the State Championships on the SAS campus. Top finishers included Fox in third place among JV Boys, Libby Neubauer in first place (Belvidere, Tenn.) among JV Girls, and Madeline Sumpter in fifth place (Sewanee, Tenn.) among Freshman Girls. Neubauer also finished 3rd for the season among JV girls.

Varsity Girls’ Soccer
The varsity girls’ soccer team finished fourth in the district and qualified for the regional tournament. Head Coach Harrison Camp and assistant Jana Barnett bestowed the Coaches’ Award on sophomore Riley Burnette (Monteagle, Tenn.). The team voted sophomore Hannah von Giesen (Krefeld, Germany) as Most Improved Player and senior Sarah Beth Hobby (S. Pittsburg, Tenn.) as Most Valuable Player. Hobby and junior Sarah Grace Burns (Sewanee, Tenn.) received All-District Honors.

Varsity Volleyball
Head Varsity Volleyball Coach Rob Zeitler and assistant coach Diana Rinck bestowed the Coaches’ Award on seniors Saje Mangru (Winchester, Tenn.) and Zoe Wallace (Monteagle, Tenn.). The team named seniors Kendale James (Tracy City, Tenn.) and Katie Finn Hurst (Sewanee, Tenn.) as Most Valuable Players and senior Morgan Phares (Pensacola, Fla.) as Most Improved Player. Senior Katie Finn Hurst (Sewanee, Tenn.) and freshman Madison King (Sewanee, Tenn.) were named to the all-district team.

In other fall sports news at SAS, the Middle School Girls’ Soccer team under Head Coach Margot Burns upset the #2 seed in the conference tournament play to advance to the championship game. The team finished as 2019 Central Tennessee Conference Runner-Up.
