On Tuesday, April 23, the Varsity Boys Soccer Team celebrated its five remarkable seniors before a large home crowd prior to its final District match of the season against Grace Baptist Academy. While the SAS Mountain Lions absolutely dominated play, taking 7 shots on goal to Grace Baptist’s 2 shots on goal, they were unsuccessful at putting the ball in the net. Tough, aggressive defensive play by seniors Jack Shattuck, Grant Shattuck, and Dimitri Sherrill along with juniors Toby Van de Ven and Petre Gotsridze effectively shut down most of Grace Baptist’s offense. 8th grade goalkeeper Konrad Knoll stepped up to handle with confidence the few shots Grace was able to get off and shut down opportunities outside the penalty box. Knoll posted a clean sheet for the match with 2 saves. 10th grader Sam Goodpaster and juniors Ben Geukian, Russ Holland, and Gabin Mugisha controlled the flow of the game in the middle of the field and the attacking third. 9th grader Mark Rogers came off the bench several times, adding energy and intensity at critical times in the match, while 8th grade newcomer Max Goodpaster created several exciting opportunities down the wings and in front of the goal.
The SAS Soccer Team will travel to Knoxville on April 30 for the first round of District Tournament Play.
