Varsity Girls' Soccer Finishes 2-1-1

St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School’s girls' varsity soccer team had a very condensed season due to strict COVID-19 protocols put in place by the school to protect the SAS community. The team finished 2-1-1. SAS COVID-19 protocols preclude the team from participating in the district tournament as many of the other teams and schools are not abiding by as stringent precautions. To date, the SAS protocols seem to be working. So far, the school has not had an on-campus student or employee test positive.

Below is a summary of the girls’ varsity soccer season:

9/3/20 SAS at Middle Tennessee Christian School 1-1

Senior Sarah Grace Burns scored the one goal for the SAS Mountain Lions. Although the SAS team dominated the game outshooting MTCS 15 to 2), the Mountain Lions allowed the other team to score off a free kick in the first half on their one breakaway. SAS came back and tied up the match in the second half but struggled to find the game-winning goal despite dominating play.

9/17/20 SAS at Silverdale Baptist 1-5

Silverdale dominated play in the first half scoring all five of their goals, two of which, unfortunately, were with the assistance of SAS players. SAS learned from their mistakes and came out much more organized in the second half. The Mountain Lions held Silverdale scoreless in the second half and senior Lily Garner scored her first goal as an SAS Mountain Lion.

10/1/20 SAS at Webb 5-0

Burns scored the Mountain Lions’ first goal with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. The Mountain Lions dominated play in the first half but had a hard time finding the back of the net. The second half was more even but SAS dominated scoring with two goals by Burns, one assisted by senior Tania Gonzalez Horstmann. Gonzalez Horstmann also had an unassisted goal as she went one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Garner and eighth-grader Elisabeth Perkins also scored. This was Perkins's first varsity goal.

10/3/20 SAS vs Chattanooga Arts and Science, Senior Day at home 3-2

After a scoreless first half, CSAS found the back of the net within 10 minutes of the second half.

Gonzalez Horstmann then scored two goals with Garner assisting on one of them to give SAS the lead. With about 10 minutes remaining in the match, CSAS scored the equalizer. However, SAS quickly answered when sophomore Verena Pate split the CSAS defense with a through pass to freshman Hadlee Hale who went right to goal but was taken down in the goal box from behind. This led to a penalty kick that Burns nailed for the game-winning goal.

The SAS varsity girls’ soccer team is coached by head coach Margot Burns and assistant coach Jana Barnett.
