Welcoming New Faces to SAS

Jeffrey Christopher joins SAS as a mathematics teacher. Jeffrey has more than a decade of experience in teaching all levels of high school math. Before coming to SAS, he taught at STEM School of Chattanooga, Brainerd High School in Chattanooga, and Austin High School in Sugar Land, Texas where he also coached track and helped with the school's summer athletic conditioning program. Jeffrey has also coached climbing. He received his B.S. in Mathematics from the University of the South and his M.S. in Pre-Professional Mathematics from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. 

Barry Dillon, a familiar face on the SAS campus as a SAS parent and the husband of CFOO and alumna Jennifer Dillon, joins our Humanities faculty in 2022. Barry has taught everything from humanities to American Sign Language to robotics and from grade 4 to 12. He most recently taught at Spring Valley School in Birmingham, Ala., Kingwood Christian School in Alabaster, Ala., and Providence Academy in Leesburg, Va. He has special training in adaptive technologies and working with students with learning differences, dyslexia, and dysgraphia. Since moving to the area, he has been offering math remediation in the Grundy County Schools. Barry received his R.B.A. in psychology from Bluefield State College and an M.Div. from Emory University. 

Peter Phillips joins SAS as the Father Flye Fellow, focusing specifically on teaching History. Peter is a Class of 2018 graduate of the University of the South and Class of 2014 honors scholar of The McCallie School in Chattanooga. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, with a minor concentration in International and Global Studies. Peter is conversationally fluent in Spanish.From 2018 to 2020, was the English Language Assistant at Ministerio de Educación in Spain. Most recently, he taught Lower School Spanish at Forsyth Country Day School in Lewisville, North Carolina. While at FCDS, Peter also served as Assistant Coach for the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team. 

Dr. Nicolas Ercole also joins the Humanities team. For the last five years, Dr. Ercole has taught courses in world history, geography, humanities, film, and U.S. history at Stratford Academy in Macon, Ga. He also started the school’s film club and advised the Model U.N. He was previously Adjunct Professor, teaching assistant, and research assistant at American University in Washington, D.C. where he received his Ph.D. and taught courses on imperialism, revolution, diplomatic history the Holocaust, the Middle East, and East Asia. He has presented his research at the American Historical Association and the Chesapeake American Studies Association conferences. In addition to his doctorate, Dr. Ercole earned his B.A. (Cum Laude) in History from George Mason and completed intensive Arabic language study at Middlebury College. His doctoral thesis focused on Arab nationalism, culture, diplomacy, and U.S.-Syrian relations early in the 20th century.

Cameron Helvey joins SAS as Dean of Students. Cameron is currently Associate Director of Resident Life and Dean of Residential Students at the Hun School in Princeton, New Jersey where he oversees all aspects of day-to-day life for 180 boarding students in grades 9-12, with specific responsibility for student social and emotional learning, academic progress, and discipline. He was also the boys' basketball coach, student government advisor, and a member of the History & Global Studies faculty. Cameron was previously Assistant Director of Summer Programs at Oakwood School in Morgan Hill, California, and a visiting faculty member at Clifford International School in Guangzhou, China. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University where he studied Teaching Social Science. He received his MA in Teaching of Social Studies from Columbia University's Teachers College and completed graduate course work through Georgetown University's James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation. Cameron is currently enrolled as a doctoral candidate in K-12 Education Leadership at Vanderbilt University. He did his missionary work with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil and is fluent in Portuguese. As a high school student, Cameron was Senior Class President, captain of the varsity basketball team, editor-in-chief of the yearbook, and earned his Eagle Scout status. Cameron and his wife Mckenzie and two young kids, Lyla (age 3) and Russell (age 2), will live in the Father Flye House on campus.

Jolene Cox joins SAS as our part-time Nurse. Jolene has over 17 years of registered nursing experience. Over the years, she has gained an exceptional amount of knowledge on school based care within the education system. Having graduated summa cum laude, Jolene has a Bachelors of Science Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington. Prior to pursuing nursing, Jolene earned her Associates degree in Arts and Science from Shoreline Community College. Jolene recently worked in the Lakewood School District in North Lakewood, Washington. While there, Jolene attended many educational workshops and reviewed professional publications to maintain competency in cursing specialty. She developed individualized health plans and 504s to perform appropriate treatments for her patients. Jolene currently lives in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. 

Frank Allen joins Speed Baranco and Michael Short as the Assistant Mountain Biking Coach. Over the past few years, Frank led several trail rides with family and friends, encouraging him to obtain NIICA Level 1 Instructor certification last year. For almost 20 years, Frank taught young people various outdoor skills including but not limited to hunting education, wildlife conservation, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing and plant and wildlife identification. He is married to Shannon and has a 11 year old son named Flynn. 

Kayla Long will join our community as a part time ceramics instructor. Kayla holds a B.A. in Ceramics and Marketing from Austin Peay State University and an A.A. in Early Childhood Education from Nashville State Community College. Most recently, she worked in sales and marketing at the Yerba Mate Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee and has past experience as a studio assistant, customer service representative and art seller. Kayla has a tremendous interest and passion for teaching art to youth.
