NOTE: Due to COVID-19, the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) will not be sanctioning races for the fall season.

St. Andrew’s–Sewanee offers a comprehensive mountain biking program for students in grades six through twelve.

The racing team is composed of experienced riders who compete against other schools in the Tennessee NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) league. Boys and girls compete in separate divisions with categories for middle school, freshmen, sophomore, junior varsity, and varsity riders. Riders will be encouraged to set goals and track their progress through a season-long training program and occasional fitness tests.

For students who would like to learn basic mountain biking skills and simply enjoy riding the trails without competing, an Adventure Cycling afternoon program is offered in the spring.

The SAS mountain biking program is designed to provide a wide range of riding experiences for boys and girls of all ages and abilities. The coaches are committed to creating a positive environment that fosters respect, support, inclusiveness, fairness, safety, enthusiasm, and work ethic.

Coaching Staff

  • Co-Head Coach

Co-Head Coach Baranco is a life-long biking enthusiast. He formed a high school racing league in 2003 and ran it under NORBA sanctioning until 2008. In 2012, he became the founding president of the Tennessee chapter of NICA. He is certified as a NICA Head Coach. Coach Baranco was Scoutmaster of the SAS Boy Scout Troop 14 for nine years and has led youth in many high adventure outings.

  • Co-Head Coach

Michael Short has been mountain biking since he was old enough to build a plywood jump in my driveway and repeatedly skin my elbows. Since arriving at SAS in 2014, Coach Short has taken the sport more seriously as an avenue to lifelong fitness, adventure, and friendships. He is a NICA certified coach, continually learning more about teaching skills, maintaining trails, making fitness fun, and creating a healthy team environment.

  • Assistant Coach

Coach Ford has coached mountain biking at SAS with head coach Speed Baranco since 2008, teaching middle school and high school kids to ride safely and have fun on bikes. Her coaching mission is to inspire improvement and to empower kids to create positivity, joy, and resilience in their lives. Coach Ford is a certified Level 3 National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) coach and the Tennessee Interscholastic Cycling League Coordinator for the NICA GRiT (Girls Riding Together) program working to get more girls and women riding mountain bikes.
