Coach Knoll teaches Science 7 and 8, IDE8 (Inquire-Discover-Explore 8th grade), an upper school field-based science elective, and coaches middle school and high school swimming. She has 13 years of coaching experience, serving as the middle school girls’ soccer head coach, and the varsity boys’ and girls’ soccer assistant coach. Coach Knoll played soccer at The University of the South, serving as team captain her senior year. Over the last 10 years, her athletic attention has turned increasingly towards competitive swimming. Coach Knoll holds an American Swim Coaches’ Association Level 1 Certification, and she is in the process of obtaining her Level 2 Certification.
Coach Long was named the 2013 Middle Tennessee High School Swim Association’s Coach of the Year. Long started coaching in 1996, providing guidance to the Tullahoma Swim Club’s 10 and under group. In 2001, her son, Ralph Long, began swimming with the Sewanee TigerSharks, the town’s summer league swim team, and Nan offered her assistance to TigerSharks coach, Max Obermiller. She has been helping to run TigerSharks’ meets ever since. Nan began coaching at SAS in 2005 and served as head coach during the 2006-07 season. Highlights of Nan’s coaching career include watching her son break the University of the South’s pool record as a high school sophomore and go on to earn second place in the state in the 500 freestyle. Ralph went on to swim as a Division I athlete for Georgia Tech.
Coach Wheeler came to SAS in 2018 as the Father Flye Fellow, an SAS program designed to train the next generation of boarding school teachers and coaches. He is now a residential faculty member teaching English and American Studies. Coach Wheeler is a 2018 graduate of the University of the South. He majored in English and played varsity baseball. He attended Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville where he was a member of the varsity baseball team and a summer sports camp counselor. Coach Wheeler is an Eagle Scout and enjoys community volunteering, hiking, fishing, and football.
