2021 Track and Field Team

2021 Season Highlights: 

The team finished 3rd and 4th in two large meets consisting of 15 or more schools four and five times our size. We won our first home meet and finished 2nd in our last home meet. Each athlete accomplished a PR in at least one event this season while many of you tried new events for the betterment of the team.

Coaching Staff

  • Head Coach

    Coach Burns is a mathematics teacher, Assistant Athletic Director, and coaches middle school girls' soccer and track and field. She was formerly the SAS middle school boys' soccer coach, varsity girls' soccer coach, and the head women's soccer coach at The University of the South. In 2002 she was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's Coach-of-the-Year. She holds a US Soccer Federation "B" license, an NSCAA Advanced National Coaching Diploma, and is in the process of getting her USFAF Level I certification in track and field. A high school track athlete, Coach Burns made it to the state meet in the 400m, 800m, and 4X400 relay her sophomore and junior years. She was recruited to run Division I track but chose to play pursue soccer. Coach Burns earned her B.S. in Mathematics from Colorado College where she played soccer, three times making it to the Division I National Tournament. Coach Burns and the 1986 Colorado College women’s soccer team were inducted into the Colorado College Athletics Hall of Fame.

    Bret Windhauser holds a M.A. in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from University of Washington and a B.A. in International and Global Studies and French and French Studies from the University of the South where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors in both majors. He also holds a certificate in Refugees, Health, and Humanitarian Action from the School of International Training in Amman, Jordan. Bret has taught or assisted in teaching college-level surveys of the Middle East, Ancient Near Eastern History, the History of the Hebrew Bible, and intermediate Arabic. He will present his research at the 2021 Middle Eastern Studies Association conference and is a contributing member to historical digital humanities projects researching 19th century Iraq and 14th-20th century Ethiopian religious literature.
