Each year SAS hosts a college counseling workshop for junior students and their parents. The workshop includes sessions with the Director of College Counseling and with college counselors and financial aid officers from the University of the South who help to explain the process and give families a preview of what to expect. Throughout the junior year our Director of College Counseling meets with juniors in groups and individually.
In a typical year, more than 50 colleges and universities send admission representatives to SAS. Given our remote location and small size, this is a clear testament to the reputation our graduates have in the college world.
On Opening Weekend there is another college counseling program for senior parents. And yet another college counseling speaker or panel on Upper School Family Weekend.
Each year, the first senior accepted into college receives special recognition and all acceptances are announced to hearty applause in Chapel.
Director of College Counseling Daniel P. Monahan joined SAS in 2018. Formerly director of college counseling at Cheshire Academy, a coeducational boarding school in Connecticut, Dan planned and administered all aspects of the college counseling process which began with academic career planning in the ninth grade and continued with guidance in the sophomore and junior years, as well as a senior college workshop, college fair, and college athletic recruiting program. He also served as an advisor and assistant football and track and field coach and was house head for 55 senior and post graduate students, as well as supervising eight dorm parents. He formerly served in senior leadership roles in admission and enrollment management at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass. and Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H.
