The St. Andrews-Sewanee Mountain Lions closed out a spectacular 2017 football season with a 26-13 victory over their arch rival, The Webb School. The game was played under the lights at Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium on the beautiful campus of the University of the South on Friday, October 20. The win gave the Mountain Lions a 7-1 regular season. A three-way tie in the MTAC league left the championship game decided by a coin toss which SAS lost. The Mountain Lions will instead play a final "Bowl Game" on Friday, October 27 at 3 p.m. at home against Lighthouse Christian.
On a perfect autumn evening, the Mountain Lions jumped out in front on a one-yard plunge by Emmanuel Thombs with 4:40 remaining in the opening quarter. Reliable placekicker Gabriel Stevens nailed the point after touchdown and the hosts led 7-0. Webb tied the game at 1:22 in the first quarter with a 21-yard pass and a successful PAT boot.
The Mountain Lions seized control of the contest in the second quarter with a 57-yard touchdown sprint by quarterback Dustin Stensby and a 19-yard touchdown pass from Stensby to Steven Zhu. Stevens made one of two PATs and the Mountain Lions led 20-7 at the half. The Stensby to Zhu touchdown pass came with :05 left in the half giving SAS the momentum heading into the second half.
After a scoreless third stanza the Mountain Lions added their final touchdown of the evening with a one-yard run from Blaise Zeitler. The conversion failed and with 10:05 remaining in the game the Mountain Lions had a 26-7 lead. Webb added their second and final score with a one-yard pass with 5:30 remaining. The conversion failed and the score was 26-13, which became the final score.
Offensively, Stensby was the rushing leader as he has been most of the season. He rushed 15 times for 189 yards. He was 2-8-0 for 40 yards passing. He had a rushing and passing TD. Zeitler ran 13 times for 78 yards and a touchdown and also caught a pass for 21 yards. Jack Simons carried the ball 15 times for 38 yards and Thombs carried three times for 16 yards and a touchdown. Zhu had the other reception, which was a 19 yard touchdown aerial.
Defensively, Jalen Tillman had seven tackles including one for a loss. Justin Elgouhary had six stops, broke up two passes, and forced a fumble. Stevens and Zeitler had five tackles each. Zeitler also broke up three passes. Laurenz Schumacher and Jarrett Willis had three tackles each. Schumacher had two of his stops for losses and recovered a fumble. Larson Heitzenrater, seeing his first action of the season after an injury had two tackles as did Ben Matthews.
Simons, Zhu, and Bailey McLean each had one tackle. Zhu had an interception and McLean recovered a fumble.
The teams eight seniors, Justin Elgouhary, Caden Graham, Bailey McLean, Jack Simons, Dustin Stensby, Emmanuel Thombs, Blaise Zeitler, and Steven Zhu, were honored at halftime.
