Fall varsity athletes at St. Andrew's-Sewanee School were recently honored at a morning all-school assembly. In front of the entire student body, athletes were presented with the Most Improved Player (MIP), the Most Valuable Player (MVP), and the Coaches' Awards. The players on the teams vote for the MIP and MVP awards.
SAS celebrated the achievements of the varsity fall teams, including cross country, football, golf, mountain biking, girls' soccer and volleyball.
Season highlights included an 8-1 season finish for the varsity football team, making them regular season co-champions in the Middle Tennessee Athletic Conference. The championship game qualifiers were decided by a three-way coin toss that SAS lost, but the team instead played in the MTAC Bowl Game, beating Lighthouse Christian School. Five SAS football players were invited to participate in the Extreme All-Star Game: Dustin Stensby, Blaise Zeitler, Jalen Tillman, Justin Elgouhary, and Gabriel Stevens. Dustin Stensby was also named to the 2017 Varsity Football MTAC Regular Season All Conference Team.
The girls' varsity cross country team came in 7th in the DII-A small schools Eastern Region and runner Carla Hof finishing 20th in region and taking 1st place at the Grundy County meet. Boys' runner Seth Walker finished 23rd in the region.
Aubrey Black received All-District Team Honors in golf and finished 1st in the region and 4th in the district. Other regional qualifiers were Gio Hui (2nd) and Tyler Rodgers (3rd).
The varsity mountain biking team finished 4th place at the state championship race. Notable individual achievements included Luciana Mollica taking 3rd place as a freshman at Lock 4 race; Aidan Smith placing 4th place in the JV class at the state championships and 5th place overall for the JV 2017 season; and Matthew Mollica placing 3rd place in the Varsity class at the Chickasaw Trace race, 4th place at the state championships, and 4th place overall for the Varsity 2017 season.
The girls' varsity soccer team finished 5-4-2 for the season and 3rd in the district. Kate Butler and Rachel Alvarez received All-District Honors. Mariel Rinck led the team in scoring with 12 goals. Kate Butler led the team in assists with seven. The middle school girls' soccer team finished 3-3-1.
