The SAS Gallery will be home to a collection of art and craft by 27 artists participating in the annual Tennessee Craft - South Studio Tour, December 3-9. The self-led tour is December 8 and 9, with galleries and studios in Monteagle and Sewanee open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. It's a great opportunity to shop for art and fine crafts by area artists and SAS students, faculty, and staff.
The accompanying exhibition show provides a broad sampling of the works to be found in the 2018 TN-Craft South Holiday Tour on December 8-9.
The annual exhibition features works by TN-Craft South member artists and SAS faculty and staff. This year's show show features hooked rugs, weaving, clay, furniture, photography, painting and more. The 2018 Holiday Tour exhibition was juried by Dr. Alison J. Miller, Assistant Professor of Art History at The University of the South. Dr. Miller is a scholar of Asian art, specializing in modern and contemporary Japanese art, prints and photography, and the intersections of gender studies and visual culture. Works by artists Glyn & Will Melnyk (Ephods and Pomegranates) of Sewanee, TN, Pat Rollie of Tullahoma, TN, and Burki Gladstone of Sewanee, TN were chosen for awards of merit.
On the weekend of the tour, December 8-9, SAS students and community members will join the celebration by offering displays of their own creations -- including ceramics, jewelry, paintings and even pop-up food vendors -- all to be found in the classroom adjoining the SAS Gallery. The student art sale proceeds will be donated to an animal-focused non-profit.
The SAS Art Gallery, the SAS Spencer room and all of the Holiday Studio Tour locations will be open to the public Saturday, December 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, December 8 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The detailed map will guide you to the SAS Art Gallery and other tour locations. Hard copy maps are available in the SAS Gallery. Follow the bright yellow signs across the mountain to see the unique variety of artists and artwork on the tour.
