Posted 03/19/2007 11:00PM
In 2006, J. Lewis Card, fondly known as Lewie, was the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award at the University of Chattanooga. It is most fitting that two years later, he is recognized by his first alma mater for his distinguished career, both as an alumnus and as a lead businessman and philanthropist in Chattanooga. Lewie, who is vice-chairman of the Card-Monroe Corp., is a vital and respected member of his community, serving as a board member of The House of Refuge, The Job Partnership of Chattanooga and SunTrust Bank, and as a member of the Christian Business Men's Committee and the Christian Network Team. He is the former vice-chair for the Greater Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce and a member of New City Fellowship Church, where he serves as an elder. At UTC, he was former chairman of the UTC Roundtable, Chair of the Engineering Campaign, and a member of the Executive Committee of the U.C. Foundation. He also established the T. R. McAfee Memorial Golf Scholarship. Lewie has been a guest lecturer for senior engineering students and has donated a tract of land to the school for a proposed golf complex.
At SAS, Lewie is not only an alumnus but parent of two alumni, former Trustee, a major donor, supporter of the school's improving physical plant, and creator of The Chattanooga Scholars Program. A lecture hall in the engineering building at UTC is named "The Card Family Auditorium," and Card House on the SAS campus was named in honor of the Card family's contributions to the Cornerstone Campaign.
Lewie is married to the former Margaret Culpepper and has three sons – Lew Card SAS '96, Nate Card SAS '00, and Joseph Card – and one daughter, Sissy Card Berubie
