Posted 04/03/2014 11:00PM

Each year in the eighth grade, students participate in the Letters About Literature Contest sponsored by Humanities Tennessee. The assignment invites students to write a letter to the author of a book that has left a significant impression on the reader and has changed the way that he or she sees the world.

This year, two St. Andrew’s-Sewanee students were recognized with Honorable Mentions, and their compositions will advance to the next round for state judging. These students are Genevieve Rogers, for her letter to Rainbow Rowell, author of Fangirl, and Ryan Toomey, for his letter to J. R. R. Tolkien, author of The Hobbit.

Genevieve is the daughter of Clayton Rogers and Linda Heck of Sewanee, Tenn. Ryan Toomey is the son of Mitch and Sarah Toomey of Monteagle, Tenn.
