St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School senior Eliza McNair recently collected school supplies for the children of Gigante, Nicaragua. After three weeks of collection at SAS, a variety of supplies including paper, notebooks, markers, crayons, etc. will travel to Nicaragua with team-members of Project Waves of Optimism (Project WOO), a nonprofit organization to promote sustainable community development in the surfing regions of Latin America.
Last spring semester, Eliza traveled in Guatemala, Mexico, and Nicaragua with The Traveling School. In early May, her class spent a week with Project WOO working in a small fishing town called Gigante. The class learned about fishing, baking bread, and cooking lunch from different Gigante residents, as well as visiting the local school.
Since each Traveling School class collaborates to create a Zenith Project, a project designed to give back to one of the communities or groups it encountered while traveling, Eliza’s class decided to work with WOO to design some project that would benefit Gigante. This spring, they are working with WOO to collect school supplies for the children of Gigante for their return to school.
